Thrust Areas in Aquaculture and Marine Biotechnology The Department of Biotechnology, as a nodal funding agency, invites proposals from Individuals/Institutions – either independent or joint Multicentric in nature – for pursuing R&D work leading towards product and process development in various disciplines of Aquaculture and Marine Biotechnology on the following specific areas:

1. Structural and functional genomics related to indigenous freshwater / estuarine / marine species

2. Marine pharmaceuticals; expression of novel genes coding for bioactive macromolecules of therapeutic and industrial applications

3. Marine biomaterials, bio-adhesives, bio-flocculent, bio-surfactants, medical implants, biopolymers and bioplastics

4. Novel enzymes, biosensors

5. Bioremediation/antifouling agents from aquatic organisms

6. Development of diagnostics kits and recombinant vaccines for disease management in aquaculture

7. Development of cell/tissue culture in cultivable marine organisms, invertebrates and seaweeds etc.

8. Fish transgenics for therapeutic and ornamental purpose

9. Marine extremophiles

Proposals submitted in joint collaboration by R&D institutions with aquaculture/marine sector would be welcomed for consideration by DBT subject to substantial contribution of grant for R&D by them.
